Lake District (Apr 2016) – Day 2 – Loughrigg Fell

Sunday 17 April Having looked at the weather forecast we knew the best of the today was the morning so planned a 6 mile walk from Ambleside, that would take us up on to Loughrigg Fall. We had some breakfast and then headed to ‘The Apple Pie’ cafe for a take-away lunch which consisted of a delicious freshly-made bap for me, a Cornish pasty and sausage roll for Glenn and also (through a little communicative error) a whole apple pie rather than a slice! We then headed off on a lovely 4 hour walk up on to the fell to Loughrigg trig point which gave us great views over Windermere and Elterwater. Although it was only 11.45 we tucked into our lunch (having already had a piece of apple pie to help us up the hill!) We then headed over the hill and down towards Grasmere lake (I'd always looked up at this hill when we'd walked around the lake previously and wondered where it took you so I was happy to have now solved this!), walking along Rydal lake and past Rydal caves before following a lane all the way back to Ambleside. Happily the weather was nicer than forecast and the sun stayed out for the whole walk. We arrived back at our pad about 2pm…I was pretty knackered so we had a chill afternoon before taking a lovely drive over to Coniston and then down to Hawkshead where we had a wander and a pint in the Red Lion Inn. We then headed back to Ambleside and went back to the White Lion for tea, and were back in our cosy pad by 8.30pm for another chilled evening and good night’s sleep!
