North Berwick 16 May 2013
Taking the opportunity while the sun was shining, we took a picnic and set out in the car towards North Berwick which is located on the east coast, about 45 mins from Edinburgh.
We took a bit of a loop, driving through Haddington and East Linton before driving north to hit the coast and back round to North Berwick. The towns were small, set out like many of the towns we've driven through in Scotland but were also very pretty and quaint. North Berwick is a seaside town on the shore of the Firth of Forth known for the little islands of rock just off the coast that are bird hotspots (especially Bass Rock), and also North Berwick Law - a volcanic hill in the middle of the town nearly 200m high.
After polishing off our picnic whilst enjoying the views out to sea, we parked in the town railway station car park and set off on a walk round the town that we'd found in our little Edinburgh walks book. The walk took about 2 hours and took us up the top of the Law where we had great views of the surrounding areas, before heading back into the town, out as far as the Seabird Centre and then back across the beach and back to the car. The walk started out in the sun and we took some nice pictures at the top of the Law (see below!) however it soon turned showery as we headed off the hill so we didn't hang around much after that.
We then continued around the coast back to the Edinburgh Bypass to get home - we really enjoyed the scenery and towns on our day out round East Lothian...we also saw too many golf courses to count so for those who enjoy a round or two this is the place to visit!
