Visit from Mum!
After a day and a half staring at a computer screen trying to do my essay, Glenn and I headed to Leith on Friday afternoon to check out the seaside port. We've heard really mixed reports about Leith - think it used to be a bit of a dodgy area but now has a nice harbour area with modern flats and Michelin restaurants and has the Royal Britannia yacht berthed for tourists to go and visit. We only had a little wander around but I really liked the character of the place, and would like to go back at some point to sample the pubs and have a walk along the Waters of Leith.
After Leith we headed to Mortonhall Campsite (just 10mins drive from Morningside) where Mum had booked in after driving up from Moffat where she'd spent the previous day. It was ace seeing Mum and Lass up here...we had a cuppa and a catch up before having a wander around the campsite and a spot of tea in the local pub 'The Stables' which was situated on the campsite.
The next day we picked Mum and Lass up from the campsite and drove to Harlaw in the Pentlands where we had a lovely walk (see http://www.pentlandhillsphotos.co.uk/section149809_47092.html) taking in the sights of the hills, waterfalls, reservoirs on the way...and we also spotted a huge flock of geese that had just flown down from the Arctic! It was cold but sunny, and the walk took us about 4 hours in total including lunch and photo stops. That evening Mum came into town for tea - we went to Montpeliers in Bruntsfield which was nice before wandering back through Morningside (stopping at Cafe Luca on the way!) and showing mum our flat before dropping her back at the campsite.
On Sunday morning (another nice day weather-wise) we went to Braid Hills for a walk and a chance to take in the city view. Mum went to college in Edinburgh so it was interesting seeing what bits she remembered! At lunchtime we said our goodbyes to Mum who headed back to the Lakes to spend a night in Kendal before getting the boat home, and we headed back to the flat and back to the computer screen for me. What a brill weekend, and lovely escape from the studies for me. 🙂
