Lake District (Apr 2016) – Day 6 – Wansfell Pike/Helvellyn

Thursday 21 April Today was another lovely sunny day so Glenn decided it was the day for tackling Helvellyn..I'd seen photos of the ridge route Glenn was going to do and decided it wasn't a walk for me! So at 11am Glenn headed off in the car for his 950m ascent of Helvellyn and I headed off on foot for my 482m ascent of Wansfell Pike that overlooks Ambleside. You can view my route here - it was a lovely walk that took me about 3 hours to complete. The initial drag up to the top of Wansfell Pike was a bit tough as my legs were still sore from Skiddaw and I was facing the sun all the way to the top, however once there the views were great (see photos below). From the top the route took me over the summit, meandering over the hill and down into the valley to the little hamlet of Troutbeck. From here the walk picked up a path that took me back around the hill to High Skelghyl and then through Skelghyl Wood (with views out west to Lake Windermere) back into Ambleside. Photos from my walk: Glenn's blog update on his Helvellyn walk to follow! That evening we went out for tea (back to the White Lion) - Glenn having a double burger and dessert to take on some calories after his big walk and I half a roast chicken and then we headed back to the pad.
