First Placement

So...not much to report over the last week as we've both been busy with work. We got out over the weekend for a walk round town which was nice, headed down the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse (Queen's official residence in Scotland). We had a little look round the entrance and souvenir shop and decided we'd definitely go back on another rainy day to have a little nosey round. My first practical placement started yesterday (Monday) - based in a Skills Development Scotland (SDS) centre in the town of Musselburgh, which is about 7 miles east of Edinburgh. SDS is Scotland's national skills agency and career guidance organisation (used to be Careers Scotland), and all of us on the course have been sent to various SDS centres across Scotland. It's been really informative so far learning about the various policies that guide the focus of the work at SDS and seeing the range of career guidance roles within the organisation and how they work first hand. Unfortunately it's half term over here this week so the careers advisors aren't going into the schools however that has meant that they have free time to sit down and talk to me! We have a second placement back at the same SDS centre in November and then have an assessment to write based on what we see (critically evaluating the services SDS provide), so I feel like a sponge this week just soaking up as much information as possible! I'm sure Glenn will want to tell you about my excellent driving skills....being from the IOM I'm not that used to roads with more than one lane so we have had some eventful car rides to Musselburgh on the city bypass with me trying to get the hang of driving over here!  Glenn made a comment yesterday to the effect of 'I thought I'd enjoy teaching my kids to drive, but if this is what it'd be like....' Thanks Darling!! Anyway, I am getting better now and only went in the wrong lane once on the way home tonight! 🙂 Off to the local cinema later to watch Taken 2 (check the cinema out here http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g186523-d2633694-Reviews-Dominion_Cinema-East_Lothian_Scotland.html) - it's meant to be really nice with armchairs etc so looking forward to that after a hard day's work!
